Step 1 — Define your activity and market

Your activity determines your licence category and often your jurisdiction. Start by describing exactly what you will sell, to whom, and where those customers are based. A business selling to UAE consumers has different needs from one invoicing clients abroad.

Step 2 — Choose your jurisdiction

Mainland suits UAE-facing businesses; free zones suit regional and export-focused ones; offshore suits holding and asset structures. Consider these factors:

  • Where your customers are located
  • Whether you need government contracts
  • Office and visa requirements
  • Budget and renewal cost
  • Banking acceptance for your profile
  • Future expansion plans

Step 3 — Reserve the name and get initial approval

Trade name rules restrict certain words and require consistency with your activity. Initial approval confirms the authority has no objection to you carrying out the proposed activity.

Step 4 — Complete documentation and licensing

Depending on structure this involves the memorandum of association, tenancy or workspace agreement, external approvals for regulated activities, and finally payment and licence issuance.

  • Memorandum of association
  • Tenancy contract and Ejari where required
  • External regulator approvals
  • Shareholder documentation
  • Licence fee payment
  • Licence issuance

Step 5 — Immigration and visas

Once licensed, the establishment card is issued and the immigration file opened. Owner and staff visas follow: entry permit, status change or entry, medical fitness, Emirates ID biometrics and stamping.

Step 6 — Banking, tax and compliance

Open a corporate bank account, register for corporate tax, assess VAT registration and, if you are in a designated category, complete AML registration. Then set up bookkeeping so filings are straightforward.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? A consultant can walk you through the detail in a short call.

Much of the process can be completed remotely, but certain stages — notably medical testing and Emirates ID biometrics for your visa — require you to be in the country.

Cost depends on the authority, licence type, number of visas and office option you choose. We prepare a written, itemised quotation for your specific case rather than publishing a headline figure that may not apply to you.

Timelines vary by authority, activity and how quickly documents and approvals are returned. Your consultant gives you an indicative schedule at the start and keeps you updated at each stage.

Typically licence renewal, visa renewals, corporate tax filing, VAT returns if registered, bookkeeping and, where applicable, AML compliance and audit.
