How UAE residency works

Residence visas are sponsored — by a company, a family member or, in the case of long-term visas, granted on the basis of qualifying criteria. The sponsor's file must be active and compliant for any application to proceed.

The main categories

Common routes to residency:

  • Investor or partner visa through your own company
  • Employee visa through an employer
  • Family visa sponsored by a resident
  • Golden Visa for eligible categories
  • Student and other specialised categories
  • Remote work permits where applicable

The process step by step

Entry permit, then either entry to the UAE or an in-country status change, followed by medical fitness testing, Emirates ID biometric registration and finally visa stamping and Emirates ID issuance.

Renewals and cancellations

Residence visas must be renewed before expiry, and cancelled properly when someone leaves the company or the country. Uncancelled visas create complications for both the individual and the sponsor.

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? A consultant can walk you through the detail in a short call.

Standard residence visas are commonly issued for two or three years depending on category and sponsor, with longer terms under Golden Visa categories.

Working outside your sponsorship generally requires the appropriate permit. We advise on part-time and multiple-employer permit options where they apply.

Timelines vary by authority, activity and how quickly documents and approvals are returned. Your consultant gives you an indicative schedule at the start and keeps you updated at each stage.

Cost depends on the authority, licence type, number of visas and office option you choose. We prepare a written, itemised quotation for your specific case rather than publishing a headline figure that may not apply to you.
